After a degree in German and French from Oxford in 1982, I gained an MA in German from Dalhousie University in Canada in 1985. I have added Italian to my services as a result of part-time study over many years, including attaining University of Westminster Grade 4 in 1995. I have worked as a translator since graduating, and in patent translation since 1986. From 1989 to 2000 I was Managing Director of Eiger Translations, a niche translation company specialising in patents and other intellectual property, which built an excellent reputation. My work included designing and delivering training in patent translation for employees and freelance suppliers. Between 2006 and 2013 I set up teams of freelance translators for large-scale specialist projects with batched delivery. As in all my work, the emphasis was on attention to detail and strict observance of deadlines. I now work exclusively as a freelance translator in patents and patent litigation. This is an ever-changing field, since by definition every patent describes the latest development in its particular technology. I am meticulous in researching this. I enjoy working closely with patent attorneys to ensure that I use terms and phraseology that are as close as possible to what they would write themselves. Patent legislation is currently undergoing rapid change as new international regulations are developed; I keep up to date with this through reading and webinars.
