Every building is unique so we need to carry out an initial survey and discuss your needs before we can give a full quote. The cost of the initial survey will vary depending on the size of the property, starting from £480 for a typical dwelling.

We start with our initial survey, this will; - Examine the condition of the building fabric and elements of historic significance that will need to be considered carefully when planning new work. - Suggest strategies for adapting altering extending your building - Identify budgets for repairs, remodelling and new work. - confirm the cost of our fees and scope of services. - Suggest timescales and suitable contractors. If you wish to proceed we will prepare a schedule of services and fees for the remainder of the project.

MAAC Studio was created by conservation architect, Calum Maclean, to encourage a wider appreciation of the beautiful historic architecture that is spread throughout the Highlands and provide access to the expertise and skills needed to transform these older buildings into beautiful modern spaces fit for the 21st Century. We love old buildings.They are beautifully crafted from high-quality materials and sit well in a landscape. They give owners a feeling of reassurance and belonging. They have character and a sense of place that you just cant get with a modern building. Unlike other architects, that work on mostly on new building projects, here at MAAC Studio we work exclusively with historic buildings, enabling us to focus our energy and invest in the skills and expertise that these buildings need.

MAAC Studio was asked to investigate damp penetration in the Ground Floor rooms and whether there was the need to install a chemical DPC. Our examination revealed that the damp wasn't coming from the ground, but from the modern cement on the outside stonework. The thickness of cement render was up to 75mm thick in places. When we stripped off the cement harling, we found that the stonework was in a desperate condition. Poor quality stone and poor workmanship, which was probably the reason why they hid it behind the harl. The harling was replaced with a traditional hot lime mix, which will provide maximum breathability which will allow the walls to dry out and stay dry. The building now look beautiful. From the first contact with the client to the completion of the work on site took around 10 months.

Traditional buildings are not like modern ones. The materials and methods of construction are different and require a different approach. Modern materials and techniques can damage your property and we are often asked to repair the damage that has been caused by inappropriate alterations.
